The Plastic Bag on Broom Trick: Say Goodbye to Your Vacuum Cleaner

Especially the kind of cleaning trick that costs almost nothing and uses something you already have at home. The plastic bag on a broom trick is a simple way to make sweeping certain messes easier, particularly when dealing with pet hair, dust, lint, crumbs, and other lightweight debris that often gets tangled in broom bristles.

The idea is simple: place a clean, lightweight plastic bag over the bristle end of the broom and secure it so it stays in place. When you sweep, the plastic creates a barrier between the debris and the bristles, helping prevent hair and dust from becoming deeply tangled. Plastic can also develop static electricity, which may help attract some lightweight particles. “It isn’t magic, and it certainly won’t replace a vacuum for every floor or every kind of mess.”

This trick is especially useful on dry, hard floors. Pet hair, human hair, crumbs, lint, and light dust are among the easiest messes to handle this way. After sweeping, you can simply remove the bag and dispose of the collected debris, avoiding the annoying task of pulling hair from the broom. For pet owners, this can be particularly convenient when a small amount of fur appears between regular vacuuming sessions.

However, the trick has clear limits. It is not suitable for wet or greasy messes, broken glass, sharp objects, or deep carpets. A vacuum remains more effective for carpets, rugs, upholstery, fine dust, and debris trapped inside fibers. The plastic bag should be viewed as a quick-cleaning shortcut rather than a replacement for a vacuum cleaner.

If you use the method regularly, consider replacing disposable bags with a washable microfiber broom cover. It can provide similar benefits while creating less waste. Ultimately, the hack is useful for those small everyday messes when you want to clean quickly without bringing out the vacuum. As the original article puts it, “Sometimes… it’s a broom and a plastic bag sitting right there in the kitchen.”
