Five Years Of Fake Business Dinners And Aspen Weekends, And I Never Once Asked Who Was Watching Me Do It

The narrator discovers that his wife Delphine has not only learned about his affair with Seraphina but has spent four months secretly documenting the financial misconduct behind his double life. While investigating the affair, Delphine discovered that he had used client entertainment accounts as a personal slush fund for five years.

The stolen money had paid for jewelry, flights, a penthouse, memberships, and other luxuries connected to his affair. Delphine gathered the evidence and sent it simultaneously to his lawyer and managing partner, ensuring that the truth could not simply be hidden or explained away.

His assistant Desmond had secretly helped Delphine. After five years of arranging and cleaning up the narrator’s dishonest expenses, Desmond finally chose to support Delphine instead. He handed over account records, flight itineraries, and receipts because he had watched her remain kind and supportive while her husband betrayed her.

The consequences came quickly. The narrator’s partners removed him from the firm to protect the business, while the fraud investigation remained unresolved. His luxurious lifestyle collapsed as the penthouse, memberships, and other assets disappeared. He also discovered that the brownstone he had taken for granted actually belonged to Delphine and had been purchased with money from her family.

Seraphina left before the narrator did, making it clear that she had been attracted largely to the wealthy, successful version of him. Once his money and professional position disappeared, so did the relationship he had risked everything to maintain.

Delphine gave birth to their son in the spring, but the narrator was not present. Under their court arrangement, he became a father who sees his child according to a schedule. He recognizes that this is more access than his actions may deserve, yet the limited relationship is something he deeply mourns.

What affects him most is that Delphine never needed to scream or publicly humiliate him. She simply collected the truth carefully and placed it where it could not be ignored. Her quietness had never meant ignorance; she had been paying attention all along.

The narrator finally realizes how badly he misunderstood her. He mistook kindness for blindness and comfort for permission to betray her. While he believed his deception was invisible, the people around him had noticed who Delphine really was: loyal, generous, and good. He had thrown away the one person who truly saw him completely, choosing instead someone who mainly saw his money.
