Always Keep the Bathroom Light On When Sleeping in a Hotel

Traveling should be relaxing, but sleeping in an unfamiliar hotel room can create unexpected problems. One simple habit some travelers use is leaving the bathroom light on overnight. It may seem unnecessary, but the soft glow can make it easier to move around safely without turning on a bright bedroom light.

Hotel rooms are unfamiliar, and after waking suddenly, it can be difficult to remember where furniture, luggage, or shoes are located. “A little light spilling from the bathroom can make it much easier to move around without fumbling in complete darkness.” This can be especially useful for older adults, children, people recovering from injuries, or travelers dealing with jet lag.

The light can also make nighttime bathroom trips easier. Instead of searching for a switch or using your phone, leaving the bathroom door slightly open allows gentle light to reach the sleeping area. It may also reduce the confusion that comes from waking up in a completely unfamiliar room. During an emergency, that extra visibility could help you quickly find your shoes, phone, room key, or the exit.

For families, a small bathroom light can be especially helpful. Parents can check on children, prepare bottles, or respond to a nightmare without turning on bright lights. It can also make it easier to find medication, water, glasses, or other important items during the night. “Many travelers find this much more comfortable than suddenly exposing themselves to bright overhead lighting.”

However, leaving the light on is not necessary for everyone. Some people sleep better in complete darkness, and even a small glow may disturb them. A rechargeable night light, dim flashlight, or motion-activated travel light can provide a good alternative. Whatever you choose, basic hotel safety still matters: lock the door, locate the emergency exit, keep shoes nearby, and keep your phone charged. Ultimately, the bathroom light is simply a small precaution that may make an unfamiliar hotel room safer and more comfortable.
