Tragedy at Local Youth Hockey Game Shocks Rhode Island Community

An afternoon meant to celebrate youth sports and community spirit instead became one of the most painful days in recent memory for families gathered at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026, what began as confusion over loud noises inside the arena quickly escalated into panic as spectators realized the sounds were gunfire.

Families rushed to protect their children, players were hurried off the ice, and arena staff directed people toward exits as law enforcement responded. By the time authorities secured the building, three individuals — including a child — had lost their lives, and several others were reported in critical condition. The scene, described by witnesses as chaotic and heartbreaking, unfolded during what was supposed to be a routine youth hockey event.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed that officers responded rapidly and secured the premises. Authorities stated that the suspected individual involved was found deceased at the scene from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted injury. Officials emphasized that responding officers did not discharge their weapons. Surrounding streets were temporarily closed while emergency personnel managed the situation and reunification efforts for families were organized.

Early findings suggest the violence was not random. Investigators indicated that the incident appears to have stemmed from a family-related dispute. In the days that followed, more details emerged about the individual identified by authorities as Robert Dorgan, who also used the name Roberta Esposito. Public records referenced prior legal disagreements among family members, though several of those cases had previously been dismissed.

The emotional toll extended beyond the immediate victims. A woman who identified herself publicly as the suspect’s daughter acknowledged her father’s involvement and spoke about long-standing mental health struggles within the family. Advocacy organizations have since noted how unresolved domestic conflicts and untreated mental health challenges can escalate in devastating ways if not addressed early.

City leaders expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien described the event as profoundly heartbreaking, emphasizing that a venue known for teamwork and youth development had instead become the site of unimaginable loss. The Coventry School District confirmed that all of its student-athletes present were safely escorted home under supervision, though counselors and support services were made available in the days that followed.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses to fully reconstruct the timeline. For now, the focus remains on supporting grieving families and a shaken community. What was meant to be an ordinary afternoon of school spirit has left a lasting scar, reminding many of the fragile line between celebration and tragedy.
