Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Ringworm is a common fungal infection that affects the skin, scalp, and nails. Despite its name, it is not caused by a worm but by fungi known as dermatophytes, which feed on keratin found in skin, hair, and nails. The infection is highly contagious but is usually easy to treat when detected early.

The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, making areas such as the feet, groin, underarms, and skin folds especially vulnerable. Tight clothing, sweaty shoes, and damp skin create ideal conditions for fungal growth. One of the most recognizable signs is a circular, red, itchy rash with a raised border and clearer center. Other symptoms may include dry, flaky skin, burning sensations, and peeling.

Ringworm can appear on different parts of the body, including the feet (athlete’s foot), groin (jock itch), scalp, and nails. Scalp infections may cause itching, scaling, and patches of hair loss, while nail infections can lead to discoloration, thickening, and brittle nails. These cases often require prescription oral antifungal medication because topical creams may not reach the infection effectively.
