Found a Bucket Full of These Weird Metal Things

The metal objects in the photo are **maple sap taps**, also known as **spiles**. They are not old plumbing parts or random hardware, but tools used to collect sap from maple trees for making maple syrup. A spile is inserted into a small hole drilled in the tree, allowing the sap to flow into a bucket or collection system.

Maple sap only flows during a short period in late winter and early spring when temperatures alternate between freezing nights and warmer days. These temperature changes create pressure inside the tree, pushing the sap outward. The spile does not create the flow—it simply directs the naturally flowing sap into a clean container.

In the past, most spiles were used with metal buckets hanging from trees. Today, many producers use plastic tubing to transport sap to central collection tanks. Finding a bucket full of old metal spiles often suggests that the previous owners of the house once produced maple syrup or were involved in seasonal farming.

Fresh maple sap is mostly water and must be boiled for a long time to become maple syrup. It takes about **40 liters of sap to produce 1 liter of syrup**. These simple tools are an important part of maple syrup production and represent a long-standing agricultural tradition that is still practiced today.
