Everybody loved Elvis Presley in this movie – but few noticed the weird detail about his hair

*Love Me Tender* marked Elvis Presley’s first movie and introduced him to audiences as a film actor in 1956. Originally titled **”The Reno Brothers,”** the film was renamed after his hit song to capitalize on his growing popularity. Although Elvis was not originally cast as the lead, his rising fame led producers to expand his role and include musical performances. Cast members praised his professionalism, noting that he memorized not only his own lines but also those of other actors. Fans were so excited during screenings that their cheers often drowned out his dialogue.

Behind the scenes, Elvis had hoped to make his acting debut in a serious dramatic role, but the studio chose to highlight his musical success instead. During production, he reportedly developed a close friendship with co-star Debra Paget and is said to have proposed marriage. Although the proposal was declined because of her parents’ objections, the two remained on good terms.

The film is also remembered for several noticeable continuity errors. Even though the story is set during the American Civil War, attentive viewers have spotted modern details, including what appears to be a zipper on a soldier’s uniform and a parked car visible in the background of one scene. Another famous mistake occurs when Elvis briefly removes both hands from his guitar while the music continues, creating the illusion that he is still playing.

One of the biggest changes came after filming ended. Test audiences disliked the original ending because Elvis’ character died, so the filmmakers added a new closing sequence showing **”his silhouette singing during the end credits.”** By then, Elvis had dyed his naturally light brown hair black, making his appearance noticeably different from the rest of the film. It remains one of the movie’s most recognizable details for fans who watch closely.
