Beloved TV mom from hit series ALF dies aged 77

Television has lost a familiar and beloved face with the passing of Anne Schedeen, best known for playing Kate Tanner on the hit sitcom ALF. She died at 77, leaving behind a career that touched millions of viewers who remember her as the caring mother holding together one of TV’s most unusual families. Her family shared the news on Facebook, writing, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share Annie has passed peacefully.”

Their tribute celebrated the many sides of her life beyond acting, describing her “extraordinary legacy of creative energy, whip smart humor, delight in her family, adoration for little dogs, passion for second-hand thrifting, and love for a good story.” They added, “She was a force,” and encouraged friends and fans to “Raise a margarita in her honor.” Her loved ones also remembered her comforting words: “I’m always with you.”

Born in Portland, Oregon, on January 8, 1949, Schedeen was once an extremely shy child. She recalled, “I was so introverted as a little girl I would hide under the skirts of the dining room table and just listen to the adults.” Drama classes helped her gain confidence, leading to a successful acting career with appearances in popular shows before landing her iconic role on ALF from 1986 to 1990.

Although audiences knew her as the calm Kate Tanner, Schedeen admitted she was quite different in real life. “Kate’s on an emotional even keel… But Anne Schedeen can become a lunatic. I have very big lows and very big highs. I’m also a whole lot more interesting.”

Schedeen also devoted herself to painting, sculpture, handmade jewelry, costumes, and charitable work. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Christopher Barrett, their daughter Taylor Barrett, extended family, and beloved rescue dogs. Her family has requested donations to Habitat for Humanity in her memory, ensuring her warmth, creativity, and unforgettable presence continue to inspire others.
