Into the Silence: The Disappearance of Garrett and Della Beckwith

In the summer of 2012, Garrett Beckwith and his 19-year-old daughter, Della, set out for what they expected to be another unforgettable adventure. The two shared a deep love for climbing and hiking, and this time their destination was Mount Hooker in Wyoming’s remote Wind River Range.

For Garrett, the trip was another opportunity to strengthen the bond he had built with Della through years of exploring the outdoors together. For Della, it was a chance to push her skills alongside the father who had taught her to climb. Neither could have imagined that this journey would be their last.

Mount Hooker is one of the most challenging climbs in the continental United States. Towering nearly 12,500 feet, its massive north face requires days of trekking simply to reach. Isolation, sudden weather shifts, and unforgiving terrain make the area as dangerous as it is awe-inspiring.

Garrett and Della were last seen beginning their ascent. When they failed to return on schedule, concern quickly grew. Search-and-rescue teams launched an intensive operation using helicopters, dog teams, and ground crews, combing the mountain and surrounding areas.

Despite weeks of searching, no trace of the pair was ever found. Their disappearance left behind only questions, and in the absence of answers, speculation has persisted. Some believe they fell during their climb and remain hidden by crevasses or debris; others think a sudden storm may have pushed them into impossible terrain.

For their family and friends, the lack of closure is a unique and enduring pain. To lose Garrett and Della without any explanation is a grief that time does little to soften.

Yet they are remembered for more than the mystery. They are remembered for their love of adventure, their devotion to each other, and the wild places that shaped their lives.
