5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

Have you ever put on a top you love, only to feel something looks off? A shadow under the eyes, a dull tone, a tired expression that seems to appear instantly. The issue may not be the style, but the color. Some shades can either enhance your glow or quietly take it away, making a bigger difference than we expect.

As we age, colors that once worked perfectly may suddenly feel unflattering. There’s nothing unusual about this—“every color reflects light differently onto the face.” When a shade is too harsh or lacks warmth, it can create strong contrast or flatten features, leading to that “tired” appearance. The good news is that small changes in your color choices can refresh your look almost instantly.

Black is a timeless favorite because it’s slimming and elegant, but near the face it can “emphasize natural shadows and harden facial features.” Instead of giving it up, wear it lower on the body or soften it with lighter accessories. Similarly, very dark navy—often seen as a safer option—can still make the complexion look “less even, less lively,” especially if it’s too deep.

Pastels seem soft and flattering, but they can sometimes create too little contrast, leaving the skin looking washed out. Rather than avoiding them, use them in small touches or pick slightly richer tones. Khaki green, although trendy, may also dull the complexion if it “absorbs the light,” so fresher greens like sage or emerald are better choices.

Neon colors bring energy and fun, but their intensity can overpower the face and highlight features you might prefer to soften. If you enjoy them, use them as accents instead of main pieces. In the end, the right colors don’t just complete an outfit—they bring your face to life.
