Twelve dead including famous singer in plane crash off remote island

A small plane crashed into the Caribbean Sea shortly after takeoff near Roatán Island in Honduras, killing at least twelve people, including U.S. citizens. Authorities reported that the aircraft went down only moments after leaving the runway, prompting an emergency rescue operation involving several agencies.

According to civil aviation official Carlos Padilla, the aircraft suddenly lost control during takeoff. He explained that the plane **“made a sharp turn to the right of the runway and fell into the water.”** Witnesses nearby described the crash as sudden and frightening. One fisherman who saw the incident said he narrowly avoided being struck when the aircraft plunged into the sea.

Rescue crews faced major difficulties reaching the crash site. Franklin Borjas, a fire captain on Roatán, said the location made recovery efforts extremely challenging. He explained, **“It’s been difficult to access the accident (site) because there are 30 meters (98 ft) of rocks and you can’t get there while walking or swimming.”** Divers also struggled during the operation, with Borjas adding, **“The divers helping with the rescue have zero visibility.”**

The plane was carrying 14 people, including crew members, according to the Honduran transport ministry. Among those who died was Garifuna musician and politician Aurelio Martínez, a respected cultural figure. The Garifuna community, which traces its heritage to Saint Vincent, is known for its rich musical traditions.

Officials and cultural organizations quickly paid tribute to Martínez. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Belize described him as **“a great friend of Belize and a true champion of Garifuna culture and music.”** They added that **“His passing leaves a void in the world of music and culture, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved his art and his people.”**

Xiomara Castro, the president of Honduras, announced the activation of an Emergency Operations Committee to coordinate rescue and response efforts. Early reports suggest the crash may have been caused by a mechanical failure. The United States Department of State also confirmed that an American citizen died in the accident and extended condolences to the family.
