My Daughter’s Father Said He Couldn’t Afford Her Prom Dress, but That Same Night He Bought His Stepdaughter a $600 Gown

Sadie was seventeen when her father told her he couldn’t afford her prom dress because work had been slow. She simply replied, “It’s fine, Dad.” But her mother knew she was hurt, especially after seeing a Facebook picture of her stepsister Madison wearing a $600 dress while their father proudly praised her. With only $412 in her bank account and rent approaching, Sadie’s mother felt helpless and wondered how to make things right.

The next morning, she called Sadie’s grandmother, Darla, and explained everything. Darla immediately offered to help, saying, “Saturday, eight o’clock. We’re going to Sioux Falls. Tell Sadie we’re going to lunch.” At a beautiful dress shop, Sadie carefully checked every price tag before trying anything on. Eventually, she found an emerald-green satin gown she loved. When she worried about the cost, Darla reassured her, saying, “Grandma picks the numbers today. You pick the dress.” She paid $389 using money she had saved from doing hair for women at church.

Darla later shared a picture of Sadie in her new dress and revealed something surprising. Fifty-one years earlier, Sadie’s father, Rory, had also missed his prom because his family couldn’t afford a suit. He had once experienced the same disappointment his daughter was now facing.

After seeing the post, Rory called Sadie and sincerely apologized. He asked if he could attend her prom pictures, and she agreed. On prom night, he arrived with a handmade steel rose painted emerald green to match her dress. After nine attempts, he had finally created the perfect corsage. He tied it around her wrist and told her, “You never have to tell me it’s fine when it isn’t. You’re always worth trying for.”

Sadie hugged him through tears, later sharing a picture with the caption, “Grandma bought my dress. Dad made my corsage. Best prom ever.”
