We Ran My In-Laws’ 1,200-Acre Farm for Ten Years on $18,000 a Year, but They Spent $60,000 on My Sister-in-Law’s Wedding

For ten years, my husband Nate and I worked on his father Vern’s 1,200-acre farm in Minnesota. Together, we earned only $1,500 a month and lived in an old mobile home with a broken furnace. Vern always promised that the farm would eventually belong to Nate, but he never followed through. When I asked for a $500 monthly raise to help cover our expenses and a $3,200 furnace replacement, he simply said, “There’s no money this year.”

I knew that wasn’t true because I managed the farm’s finances. Soon afterward, Vern sold 14,000 bushels of corn for more than $62,000 but spent the money on his daughter Tiffany’s expensive wedding. I watched every check go out while Nate and I continued struggling to make ends meet.

After years of feeling undervalued, we finally decided to leave. A neighboring farmer named Paul offered Nate $58,000 annually, health insurance, and a comfortable farmhouse. The next morning, Vern visited Paul and learned about the offer. Surprisingly, he told him, “That’s not enough. Pay him more. He’s worth it. Because I never did.” He then quietly apologized to his son.

Months later, Vern invited us to meet with a lawyer. He offered Nate a proper farming lease, a machinery purchase agreement, and transferred the family farmhouse and forty surrounding acres into our names.

Two years later, I delivered Vern his first crop-share payment of $52,318. After reading the check, he handed me another for $5,500, finally repaying the furnace expense and the raise he had refused, with interest. Our old trailer was gone, but we kept its wooden deck and placed a sign there: “HIRED MAN’S PORCH. EVERYBODY GETS PAID.” For the first time, our home was warm, and our hard work was finally appreciated.
