What That Mysterious ‘M’ on Your Wedding RSVP Card Really Means

When opening a wedding invitation, many guests notice a mysterious letter “M” printed before a blank line on the RSVP card. Without any explanation, it can be confusing, especially for people unfamiliar with traditional wedding etiquette. However, the letter is not a printing mistake. It comes from an old custom in which formal correspondence required guests to use respectful titles when responding to invitations.

The “M” stands for the beginning of titles such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss. Guests were expected to complete the title before writing their names. For example, someone named Sarah Johnson might write “Ms. Sarah Johnson.” Married couples could also include both names on the same line. The “M” has nothing to do with meal choices, marital status, or guest counts. Its only purpose is to help guests identify themselves politely.

This tradition dates back to a time when formal letters and invitations followed strict etiquette rules. Using the correct title was considered an important sign of good manners, and wedding RSVP cards followed the same conventions. Although the custom has survived for generations, many modern couples now prefer simpler wording, such as “Name” or “Guest Names,” making their invitations easier for everyone to understand.

If you receive an RSVP card with the traditional “M,” there is no need to worry. You can write the title you prefer before your name or simply provide your name if you feel more comfortable doing so. The most important thing is to clearly identify yourself and answer whether you will attend. Remember to complete any additional questions about meal preferences or dietary requirements.

Wedding etiquette continues to change with the times, but this small letter remains a reminder of how traditions can survive long after the rules that created them have faded.
