Our Son Secretly Moved His Girlfriend Into Our House and Rented Out the Basement for $600 — So We Came Home From Arizona Two Months Early

Those unexpected words from a neighbor in Mesa, Arizona, sent Gordon and his wife, Ardis, driving back to Iowa. They had left their son, Brett, responsible for checking their house while they spent the winter away. Instead, Brett had moved his girlfriend, Jade, and her younger brother, Austin, into the home and was collecting $600 a month in rent. Austin believed Brett owned the house and had paid in good faith after losing his apartment. Although Gordon was angry, he refused to leave Austin out in the freezing cold.

Gordon soon learned that Brett had lost his factory job before Christmas and had been hiding his financial troubles. During a drive to the grain elevator where Gordon had worked for forty years, he finally opened up about his own past. In 1985, Gordon had gone six weeks without pay and borrowed $400 from his father to keep their mortgage current. He had repaid the money but never told anyone how desperate things had been.

“Why didn’t you call us?” Gordon asked his son. Brett looked down and replied, “Dad, you never missed a day of work. How was I supposed to tell you I’d lost my job?” His words made Gordon realize that he had unknowingly taught his son to hide his struggles rather than ask for help.

Gordon and Brett agreed that things had to be made right. Brett would return Austin’s rent money, and they would arrange a fair solution for everyone living in the house. That evening, Gordon, Ardis, Brett, and Jade gathered around the kitchen table for coffee and an honest conversation. Their problems were not solved overnight, but they had finally begun to rebuild trust.

Gordon learned an important lesson about fatherhood: being strong does not mean never struggling. Sometimes, the greatest gift a parent can give a child is the reassurance that asking for help is never something to be ashamed of.
