I never knew this

Many household devices continue using electricity even when they appear to be turned off. Televisions, phone chargers, microwaves, computers, and gaming systems may draw small amounts of power while connected to an outlet. This is known as standby power or phantom energy, and although one device may use very little electricity, several appliances left plugged in can gradually increase energy bills. Fortunately, reducing this waste does not require expensive upgrades or major changes around the house.

Some appliances deserve extra attention because they can pose safety risks when left operating unattended. Hair dryers, curling irons, portable heaters, and certain kitchen appliances should always be switched off after use and handled according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Unplugging suitable devices can provide an additional precaution. Other electronics, such as televisions, coffee makers, and computer accessories, may also consume standby power. However, unplugging everything is unnecessary, especially when certain devices need a continuous power supply.

A simple way to reduce unnecessary electricity use is to focus on electronics that remain unused for long periods. Phone chargers can be disconnected when they are no longer needed, while televisions, gaming consoles, and computer accessories can be connected to a power strip with an on-off switch. This allows several devices to be disconnected at once. Smart plugs and timers can also help manage compatible electronics. However, refrigerators, internet equipment, medical devices, and other essential appliances should remain connected when continuous power is required.

Making these small changes part of a daily routine can help reduce energy waste over time. Before going to bed or leaving home, check that heating tools are switched off and disconnect devices that will not be used for a while. Savings will vary depending on electricity prices and household habits, but even simple adjustments can make a difference. Rather than unplugging every appliance, concentrate on devices that offer the greatest opportunity to save. Sometimes, lowering electricity waste and improving home safety starts with something as simple as switching off a power strip.
