Do Not Turn On The TV When Checking Into A Hotel

When checking into a motel or hotel, many people skip the step of thoroughly inspecting the room. However, this is something everyone should take the time to do.

A television is typically considered a standard item in a hotel room, usually placed directly in front of the bed. This convenient spot is also ideal for hiding cameras. From the TV’s position, a hidden camera can easily capture footage of all corners of the room, allowing malicious individuals to secretly record your activities and invade your privacy.

What makes this even more concerning is that the placement of hidden cameras near the TV might make you less suspicious. With today’s technology, cameras are incredibly small, wireless, and can transmit data over long distances, making them easier to hide and harder to detect.

Both the TV and the set-top box use infrared signals to connect to the remote control. Criminals can exploit this by placing a camera in the same location, as the camera also uses infrared, which can cause confusion when you’re inspecting the room.

This is why it’s a good idea to unplug the TV as soon as you check into a motel or hotel. After unplugging it, you can close the curtains, turn off the lights, and use your phone’s camera in video recording mode to scan the room. Since the camera is powered independently of the TV, it will still function even if the TV is unplugged. If you notice unusual light spots on your phone’s screen, take a closer look at the areas where those spots are coming from.

You can also use your phone’s flash to illuminate the room. Hidden cameras are often sensitive to light, so they may reflect the flash, helping you spot them.

When inspecting the room, look out for any blue or red light dots. If you notice any, you should examine those spots more closely.

In addition to checking the TV area, make sure to inspect other common hiding spots in the room—such as pictures hanging above the bed, flower vases, potted plants, night lights, and bathroom fixtures. These are all places where a hidden camera could be concealed.
