Why One McDonald’s Has Turquoise Arches

When McDonald’s arrived in Sedona, Arizona, in 1993, it expected to use its famous golden arches like it did everywhere else. However, the desert town had strict design rules to protect its natural beauty. Officials believed the bright yellow sign would clash with the surrounding red rocks and distract from the landscape that made Sedona special.

Rather than ignore the town’s requirements, McDonald’s agreed to make an unusual change. Instead of its traditional golden arches, the restaurant installed turquoise ones, a blue-green color that blended more naturally with the desert surroundings. The decision created a distinctive landmark that looked very different from the familiar signs seen around the world.

Over time, the turquoise arches became a popular attraction, drawing curious visitors who wanted to see the unusual McDonald’s for themselves. What began as a disagreement over a sign turned into an example of how local communities can influence even the biggest international brands.

Sedona’s story shows that protecting a town’s character sometimes means making companies adapt to the environment rather than forcing the environment to adapt to them. By choosing a different color, McDonald’s became part of the landscape instead of competing with it.
