My Husband Said I’d ‘Let Myself Go’ After 27 Years of Marriage

For 27 years, Thursday meant chicken pot pie, Frank’s favorite meal. But one evening, after barely touching his dinner, he looked at his wife, Greta, and said, “Greta, I want a divorce.” When she thought he was joking, he added, “You’ve let yourself go.” After raising two children, managing their home, and putting her career aside to support Frank’s success, Greta was devastated. He eventually admitted he was seeing another woman, leaving Greta to face the painful end of the marriage she thought would last forever.

The divorce forced Greta to rebuild her life. She packed away family photographs, learned to eat dinner alone, and struggled with doubts about her appearance and worth. Although she had grown older, so had Frank. They had both spent 27 years building a life together, yet he treated those years as a reason to leave her behind. Slowly, Greta stopped wondering what she could have done to make him stay and began thinking about what she wanted for herself.

She reconnected with old friends, updated her résumé, and considered returning to work she had once enjoyed. Three months after Frank left, she discovered a forgotten box in the garage, hidden behind old Christmas decorations. Recognizing her own handwriting, she opened it and found something connected to the dreams she had put aside while supporting her husband and raising their children. The discovery reminded her of the woman she had been before she began placing everyone else’s needs ahead of her own.

The following morning, Frank appeared at her front door, furious. “How could you, Greta?” he demanded. Instead of becoming frightened or rushing to defend herself, Greta remained calm and told him, “Frank, lower your voice.” For the first time since their marriage ended, she realized she no longer needed his approval to stand up for herself.

Greta understood that their marriage had shaped her life, but it had not erased her identity. Frank had the right to leave, but he could not decide that 27 years of love, sacrifice, and family life were worthless simply because he no longer wanted to stay.
