What to Do First After a Snake Bite: Critical Steps That Could Save Your Life
A snake bite can become life-threatening within hours. Knowing the right first-aid steps may help reduce complications and improve outcomes.

Snake bites occur in many parts of the world and can range from minor injuries to serious medical emergencies. While not every snake is venomous, it is often difficult to tell immediately whether venom has been injected. Because of this uncertainty, every snake bite should be treated as a potentially serious situation requiring prompt medical attention.

1. Try to Identify the Snake Safely
If possible, take note of the snake’s appearance from a safe distance. Features such as color, markings, head shape, and size may help medical professionals determine whether the snake was venomous.

However, never attempt to catch, kill, or closely approach the snake. Many secondary bites occur when people try to handle the animal after being bitten.

A photo taken from a safe distance may be useful if it can be done without putting yourself at additional risk.

2. Stay Calm and Avoid Panic
Remaining calm is one of the most important things you can do after a snake bite.

Fear and panic can increase heart rate and circulation, potentially allowing venom to spread through the body more quickly. Try to breathe slowly and limit unnecessary movement while arranging emergency medical care.

3. Immobilize the Affected Limb
Keeping the bitten area as still as possible may help slow the movement of venom through the lymphatic system.
