I Let My Brother In Law Sell My Hay And Then Asked One Simple Question

After discovering that Russell had claimed her late husband Frank’s hay crop, the narrator accompanied Merle to Walt Hruska’s farm to confront the men. Russell confidently insisted that Frank had left him a note granting him the hay. Walt reluctantly handed over the paper, which was written in Frank’s own handwriting.

The note stated that Russell could take hay from the north field for the season. However, the narrator immediately recognized it as a document from six years earlier, when flooding had ruined Russell’s pasture. Frank had temporarily allowed his brother to cut their hay that summer, and the arrangement was never meant to continue.

Examining the paper, the narrator noticed that its top edge had been torn away, removing the date. She explained how Russell had preserved the old note and deliberately concealed its age to make his claim appear legitimate. Merle confirmed that he had witnessed Frank grant permission for only one season.

The narrator then produced Frank’s small notebook and showed them the final entry he had written before dying. It recorded that there was enough hay for her cows, proving Frank had intended the crop to support his wife and livestock. Walt realized the truth, and Russell’s confident smile disappeared.

Merle calmly ordered Walt to contact the young couple who had purchased the hay and demanded that Russell repay everyone he had deceived. He also insisted that every bale be returned to the narrator’s barn by Sunday. Although she refused to involve the sheriff, she stood firm in demanding what rightfully belonged to her. Russell eventually agreed.

By Sunday, three trucks and two trailers arrived carrying all 187 bales of hay. Merle, Walt, and the young couple helped return the entire crop, while Caleb stacked it in the barn and Russell reimbursed the buyers. The narrator shared her remaining pies with Walt and the newlyweds. Throughout the winter, her cows had enough food, and Frank’s notebook remained on the kitchen shelf as a reminder of his love and the truth that had prevailed.
