The United States Secret Service said Sunday that agents shot and killed an armed man after he breached a secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the man unlawfully entered the secured area early in the morning. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington, D.C., at the White House at the time of the incident.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the intrusion was detected at approximately 1:30 a.m. A sheriff’s deputy and two Secret Service agents confronted a white male in his early 20s who was carrying a gas can and a shotgun. He was ordered to drop both items. The man put down the gas can but raised the shotgun into a firing position. At that point, law enforcement officers opened fire and killed him.
Investigators said the man was from North Carolina and had been reported missing by his family several days earlier. Authorities believe he traveled to Florida and obtained the shotgun during the trip. The box for the firearm was found in his vehicle. Officials said he drove through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was exiting.
The FBI is leading the investigation, working with the Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is dedicating all necessary resources to the case.
This incident follows a series of political violence cases in the United States over the past few years. President Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July 2024, sustaining a minor ear injury. In a separate case later that year, a man armed with a rifle was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach and was later sentenced to life in prison.
Authorities continue to investigate the Mar-a-Lago incident.
