Who Was Waiting At The Airport, And The Reason I Was Glad A Billionaire Was Standing Next To Me When I Found Out

It was my mother-in-law.

Garrett had called her the moment he realized I had boarded a flight to Chicago, and she had driven four hours and arrived ahead of us, because she had always been faster than sense required. She was standing at the arrivals barrier with a look I recognized from three years of Sunday dinners, the specific expression she wore when she believed she was doing something righteous.

She wanted Wren. Not custody, not legally, she had no grounds for that. She wanted to take her back to Austin that night, and she had constructed a story in her head in which I was unstable and fleeing and incompetent, and if she could just get the baby into her car, the rest would follow. She said this to me, in the arrivals hall, in front of a security officer she had apparently been speaking to for twenty minutes before we landed.

Desmond was still beside me when this happened. He had not left when his security team arrived. He had told them to wait.

He did not intervene dramatically. He did not announce his name or make a scene. He simply stood next to me, calm and present, while I told my mother-in-law that I was Wren’s mother, that I had every legal right to be in Chicago, and that if she attempted to take my daughter I would be calling the police, not the security officer she had already charmed. His presence mattered not because of who he was but because I was not alone, and she had assumed I would be.

She left. Not gracefully. She called me several things I will not repeat, and she told Wren, who was nine months old and understood nothing, that she would see her soon. Then she walked back through the doors she had come through.

Desmond and I stood in the arrivals hall for a moment without speaking. Then he said he was sorry that had happened. I said I was sorry for falling asleep on him for two hours. He said we were probably even.

He gave me his card before his security team moved him toward the exit. I did not call the number for three weeks, because I had just escaped one complicated situation and I had no interest in walking into another one, regardless of what he had done with a napkin puppet.

I called eventually. We had coffee. Then we had coffee again. This is not a love story, or at least it is not only that. It is first the story of a woman who got on a plane with two suitcases and a stroller and let a stranger’s shoulder hold her up for two hours, and discovered when she landed that she was steadier than she thought.

Wren is four now. She still has the stuffed rabbit.
