My Mother-in-Law Tried Snooping in My Bedroom Only to End up Screaming and Feeling Embarrassed

I’d been married to Richard for three years. We had a happy suburban life, successful careers, and a strong marriage—except for one problem: his mother, Monica. She was always sweet to my face, calling me “darling,” but behind my back, she constantly criticized me and questioned our marriage.

At a family barbecue, she arrived with her own “backup pie” because she wasn’t sure everyone would like my cooking. Later, at our housewarming, I overheard her suggesting Richard should have married a woman from church instead. Thankfully, Richard immediately shut her down. He loved me and told her to stop trying to set him up with other women.

But Monica’s worst habit was her obsession with our bedroom. During a dinner party, she ignored the downstairs guest bathroom and went upstairs to our master bathroom instead. I found her wandering around our bedroom, opening drawers and looking through our belongings. When I confronted her, she claimed she had gotten confused by all the doors.

I told Richard what happened. He insisted his mother had probably been lost, but I reminded him this wasn’t the first time she had snooped through our private things. We decided to install a lock on the bedroom door.

Then I had an idea. Before leaving the room, I covered the doorknob with glitter. I figured if Monica tried to enter again, we’d finally have proof. Richard thought it was ridiculous but agreed.

The next day, we found Monica standing outside our bedroom, covered head to toe in golden glitter. She was furious. “You did this on purpose!” she shouted, demanding that Richard look at what his wife had done to her expensive sweater.

I smiled and asked the obvious question: “Why were you trying to get into our bedroom again?” Monica refused to answer. Instead, she accused me of humiliating her, while Richard criticized me for going too far and embarrassing his family.

I told Richard that protecting our privacy wasn’t wrong. Monica had repeatedly crossed boundaries, and the glitter simply proved it. But Richard was still angry. For the first time, I realized the bigger problem wasn’t Monica’s snooping—it was whether my husband was willing to stand beside me when his mother crossed the line.
