What I Could Actually Take Back, And The Thing The Tarot Reader Had Told Philippa That Nobody Repeated

The two moving trucks were mostly theater, and I knew it before I arrived.

My lawyer had told me the night before, plainly: gifts are gifts. Everything I bought and installed in that house, the roof, the flooring, the windows, the kitchen, was legally Philippa’s the moment it went in. Fixtures belong to the property. I could not repossess a bathroom. What I could take was the furniture, the appliances, the leather sofa, anything not bolted down, and only because I had kept every receipt in my own name and never once transferred title.

So that is what came out. The refrigerator, the washer, the television, the dining set, the bedroom furniture, the sofa Philippa chose. Eighty-five thousand dollars of renovation stayed in the walls, and about nineteen thousand of movable property went into the trucks while Philippa screamed on the porch and Desmond filmed me on his phone, which his own lawyer later told him not to post.

It was not the clean victory the wedding-day exit had felt like. It was a woman with two trucks reclaiming a couch while the neighbors watched, and it was undignified, and I did it anyway because leaving it would have felt worse.

Here is the part nobody in that family ever said out loud.

The tarot reader was real. Philippa had actually gone to one. But my cousin, who was there when Philippa booked it, told me later what the reader actually said. She did not warn Philippa about my “controlling energy.” She told Philippa that her son was marrying a woman with money, that the money would leave when the woman did, and that Philippa should be kind to me. Philippa heard the first half, the part about money and control, and rewrote the rest into a curse, because a curse gave her permission to do what she already wanted to do, which was chain the gate against a daughter-in-law she resented for being able to afford what she could not.

The reader, in other words, had told her the truth. Be kind, or lose everything. Philippa lost everything.

Desmond called for months. Not to apologize. To ask, eventually, whether I might “help with the mortgage just until things settle,” because the house I renovated turned out to be one his mother could not maintain without my income folded into the family.

I never answered.

They kept the roof, the kitchen, the floors. All of it beautiful, all of it mine once, all of it now theirs to sit inside and resent. I kept the receipts. I do not know why. Some nights I think about a woman in a red dress, sitting across from a tarot reader who told her plainly how to keep me, choosing instead to hear a curse.
