What The Camera Caught In The Corridor At 9:52, And The Sentence That Cost Me Everything Anyway

A housekeeping cart. Mine. And a second woman in uniform pushing it, forty minutes before I arrived on that floor.

Her name was Ondine. She had been at the hotel six years and she had my spare key card, because I lent it to her in March when hers demagnetized and neither of us ever thought about it again. The system logged my card. The camera logged her face.

I took the footage to the general manager that afternoon. He watched it twice. Then he told me the hotel would handle it internally and that my termination would stand, because the guest had already been given an answer and reopening it meant admitting the hotel had fired an innocent woman on a millionaire’s word.

That was it. That was the whole resolution.

Ondine was let go quietly two weeks later for unrelated performance issues, which is the phrase they used. No police, no charge, no correction. The ring was never mentioned again in writing. The guest got her insurance payout and posted nothing.

I had no money for a lawyer. I filed a wrongful termination complaint myself, on the state’s website, at my kitchen table at midnight. It was dismissed in June for insufficient documentation, because the hotel would not release the footage and Augustin could not copy it without losing his own job, and I would not ask him to.

I clean offices now. Nights, so I am home when the girls wake. It pays four dollars an hour less.

Augustin brings groceries sometimes and pretends they were on offer. He has never once let me thank him properly.

Ondine wrote to me in November. She had a sick mother and a second job that fell through and she said she had meant to put the ring back. She asked for forgiveness. I have not answered her, because I do not have any to give yet, and I would rather say nothing than lie.

My girls are six. They think I have a night job because I like the quiet.

Everyone wants to know how it ended. It ended with a woman losing a ring, getting her money back, and never learning anyone’s name. That is usually how it ends. The footage is still on a server somewhere, showing exactly what happened, and nobody with the power to look at it ever will.
