My 72-year-old dad thought I was taking him fishing like we did when I was a kid. We never had much money. He worked maintenance at a manufacturing plant, and our “vacations” were cheap day trips. But some Saturday mornings, he woke me before sunrise, packed peanut-butter sandwiches, and drove me to our favorite lake.

We always fished from the bank beneath two enormous oak trees. We could see boats heading toward the northern point, and Dad would say, “That’s where the good fishing is.” When I asked why we never went, he’d laugh and say, “You need a boat.” I didn’t understand then that he simply couldn’t afford one.

Decades later, I decided to fix that. I booked an expensive full-day fishing charter and surprised Dad. He arrived wearing the same battered green fishing hat from my childhood. When we reached the marina, the captain, Rick, stared at Dad before pulling me aside. “He really doesn’t know?” he whispered.

I assumed he meant the surprise. But Dad suddenly asked if we could go somewhere else. He wanted to return to our old spot. Confused, I reminded him how often he had talked about fishing the northern point. Dad shook his head. “I don’t think I ever said I wanted to fish there.”

Then he told me the truth. When I was seven, he had asked the marina owner about renting a boat. He couldn’t afford it. The owner, Walter, showed him our shoreline spot and told him something Dad never forgot: “Your boy won’t remember whether you had a boat. He’ll remember that you got up before sunrise to spend the morning with him.”

Rick suddenly approached. “His name was Walter,” he said. Walter had been his father. He remembered Dad for years, admiring the father who kept showing up with his son despite having almost nothing. Dad’s eyes filled with tears.

We canceled the charter and retrieved his old lawn chairs. We returned to our oak trees, unpacked sandwiches, and cast our lines. Dad caught a tiny fish and held it up proudly. I laughed. He laughed too.

The expensive boat stayed at the marina. We didn’t miss it. Sitting beside my dad in those battered chairs, I finally understood what he had given me all those years ago: not fishing trips, but time. And that had always been enough.
