\nIn 2025, Dane publicly shared that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease. In an emotional interview on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer, he described the first sign that something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n
He noticed weakness in his right hand \u2014 subtle at first.<\/p>\n
Initially, he dismissed it.<\/p>\n

Going public with the diagnosis in April 2025 was not easy, but Dane chose transparency over silence, determined to stay ahead of speculation and use his voice for awareness.<\/p>\n
Understanding ALS
\nALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord \u2014 the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement.<\/p>\n
As these neurons deteriorate, the brain loses the ability to initiate and control muscle function. Over time, this leads to:<\/p>\n
Muscle weakness and stiffness<\/p>\n
Twitching and cramping<\/p>\n
Loss of coordination<\/p>\n
Difficulty speaking or swallowing<\/p>\n

As the disease progresses, essential functions like chewing, speaking, and breathing become impaired. There is currently no cure. Most patients live three to five years after diagnosis, though each case varies.<\/p>\n
Continuing to Work Through Decline
\nDespite his diagnosis, Dane continued acting, appearing in Euphoria and The Countdown. Even as his physical abilities declined, he remained committed to his craft.<\/p>\n
A year and a half after diagnosis, he revealed that his right arm had become nearly immobile. He feared his left arm might follow. He also worried about losing strength in his legs.<\/p>\n
One particularly sobering moment came while snorkeling. Realizing he no longer had the arm strength to swim back to the boat, his daughter had to pull him to safety \u2014 a moment that reportedly shook him deeply.<\/p>\n
By mid-2025, he could no longer use his right hand. By October, he was relying on a wheelchair full time.<\/p>\n

\nDane\u2019s family confirmed that he passed away on Thursday, February 20, surrounded by loved ones \u2014 including his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.\u201d<\/p>\n
