After the funeral, he couldn’t bring himself to give away her clothes. Her dresses stayed in the closet, then in boxes in the garage. He said he’d deal with them “someday.”

Last year, I asked him if I could have them.

I didn’t tell him why.

For eleven months, I sat at my sewing machine every night after work. I cut squares out of Grandma’s dresses. The yellow one she wore to church. The green one from every Christmas photo. The red polka dots she wore to my mom’s high school graduation.

I’m not a professional. Some of my corners are crooked. But by October, I had a quilt.

Grandpa’s eightieth birthday party was at my aunt’s house. Twenty-five of us. Balloons, a sheet cake, Grandpa in his good suspenders.Plan a Birthday

My cousin Brandon arrived last. He always arrives last. He sells luxury cars, drives one, and likes everyone to know it.

When it was time for presents, Brandon went first. He handed Grandpa a black box. Inside was a gold watch.

“Three thousand dollars,” he announced. “Swiss. Only the best for you, Pops.”

Everyone oohed. Grandpa thanked him politely and set it on the table.

Then it was my turn. I handed Grandpa a big soft package wrapped in brown paper.

He opened it slowly. He pulled out the quilt.

Before he could say anything, Brandon laughed.

“Seriously? A blanket? Did you get that at Walmart?”

A few people laughed with him.

Brandon reached over, took the quilt out of Grandpa’s hands, and held it up by one corner like it smelled bad.

“Look at these crooked seams. Grandpa, you deserve better than a garage-sale rag.”

And he tossed it on the floor.

The room went quiet.

I couldn’t speak. Eleven months. Every night. And it was lying in a heap on my aunt’s carpet next to Brandon’s shoes.

I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t trust my voice.

Then Grandpa did something none of us expected.

He put both hands on the arms of his chair, and slowly, painfully, the way he does everything now, he stood up.

He bent down. He picked the quilt up off the floor.

He shook it out, carefully, like it was made of glass. He found one corner. He turned it toward the room.

And in a voice I hadn’t heard him use since the funeral, he said:

“Everybody. Come here. Look at this corner.”

The corner square was pale blue. Soft cotton, faded with age.

Grandpa’s hands were shaking as he held it up.

“This is the dress Rosie wore the day I married her,” he said. “June 1968. She made it herself. Her mother couldn’t afford a wedding dress.”Book Venues

The whole room leaned in.

In the middle of that square, I had embroidered four words in blue thread. I’d copied them from a note I found in the pocket of that dress, in Grandma’s handwriting.

Walt & Rosie. Always.

Grandpa ran his thumb over the letters.

“She wrote that on a napkin at our wedding,” he said. “And she kept it in the pocket of this dress for fifty-six years. I never knew she kept it.”Book Venues

He started to go along the quilt, square by square.

“This yellow one is Easter. She wore it every Easter, 1975 to 1990, until it wouldn’t button anymore and she laughed about it. This green is Christmas. This little red polka dot she wore when Karen graduated.”

My mom, Karen, was crying openly.

“This is Rose,” Grandpa said. “This isn’t a blanket. This is my wife.”

He held it to his chest and stood there in the middle of the living room, eighty years old, crying into his wife’s dresses.

Nobody was looking at Brandon anymore.

Grandpa wiped his eyes. Then he turned around slowly and looked at my cousin.

“Brandon.”

Brandon shifted. “Pops, I didn’t know, I just thought…”

“I know what you thought.” Grandpa picked up the gold watch box from the table and held it out to him. “Take this back, son.”

“It’s a gift.”

“Last March, you borrowed fifteen thousand dollars from me for your ‘business opportunity.’ You haven’t paid me a dime. You haven’t called me since. You show up today with a three-thousand-dollar watch, and you throw your cousin’s eleven months of work on the floor.”

The room was completely silent.

“Sell the watch,” Grandpa said. “Put it toward what you owe me. I’d rather have my fifteen thousand back than a watch I’ll never wear.”

Brandon’s face went red. He took the box. He left before the cake.

Grandpa sat back down with the quilt across his knees and didn’t let go of it for the rest of the party. When my aunt brought out the cake, he made me sit next to him while he blew out the candles.

Later, when everyone had gone, he asked me how long it had taken.

“Eleven months,” I said.

“Every night?”

“Most nights.”

He nodded. Then he said something I’ll never forget.

“Your grandmother would have told you your corners were crooked.”

We both laughed until we cried.

He sleeps under that quilt every night now. My aunt says he talks to it sometimes. Tells Rose about his day.

Brandon has paid back four thousand dollars so far. He sent Grandpa a card at Christmas. Grandpa read it, put it on the mantel, and said, “Well. It’s a start.”

And I’m working on a second quilt. For my mom. From the rest of the dresses.

I’m trying to get the corners straight this time.

My grandmother, Rose, died two years ago.
