My name is Henrietta Boonstra. I am sixty-eight. I had not known. That is the thing I have to start with, because every version of this story people tell back to me assumes I knew and was waiting for the right moment, and I did not know, and I found out because my friend Marguerite mentioned in passing at the Tuesday quilting that she sees a little boy on Vance Road every morning and did I know whose he was. I drove out the next morning to look. It was eleven degrees. He had his hands pulled up inside his sleeves. He walks it in about seventy minutes if the sidewalk on Vance is clear and closer to ninety when it is not, and there is a half mile where there is no sidewalk at all and you walk on the shoulder of a road where the trucks come through to the quarry.

My daughter Shiloh married a man named Curt Vandenberg in 2023 and they live out past the township line in a place I have been inside of four times. Shiloh does ten-hour shifts at the packing plant in Reedsboro and leaves the house at five in the morning, and Curt works from home doing something with freight dispatch, and Curt does not drive Tobias to school. I asked him, eventually, and he told me, in a voice that was perfectly reasonable, that the boy is nine and the walk is good for him and that he is not going to rearrange his working day around a child who is not his. The district is the other half of it and I want to be fair about this too. Dunmore has one bus route out that way and the boundary runs where the boundary runs, and the Vandenberg house sits three tenths of a mile inside the walk zone. I called the transportation office four times. A woman named Perpetua was apologetic every time and had no authority to change a line on a map. I wrote to the board in October. I wrote again in November. In December I got a two-paragraph letter telling me that hazardous-route exceptions require a formal safety study and that the next review cycle was in the spring. The spring. He was walking the shoulder of Vance Road in the dark in January and the answer was a review cycle in the spring.

Here is what I had. I had eleven thousand four hundred dollars, which was all of it, from when I sold Harold’s shop equipment after he passed in 2021. And I had something I had not thought about in thirty years, which is a Class B commercial licence with a passenger endorsement, because from 1981 to 1986 I drove a bus for the Reedsboro district myself, four years and a bit, and I have kept that licence current the entire time out of pure stubbornness and a yearly medical card that costs me eighty-five dollars. So on the second Wednesday in January I drove to the county surplus auction out behind the highway department, where they sell off plough trucks and mowers and the buses the districts retire, and I registered as a bidder, and I stood in the cold with about thirty men in coveralls. Lot 31 was a 2009 International with two hundred and six thousand miles on it, out of the Castellan district, brakes done in August, no rust through the floor. It went to me for two thousand two hundred dollars because nobody else wanted a bus. I paid cash. And then I sat in that bus in the parking lot for a long time with my hands on a steering wheel I had not touched since 1986, and I understood that buying it had been the easy part, because an unregistered private bus with a sixty-eight-year-old woman at the wheel cannot legally pick up one single child.

At twenty past six on a Tuesday morning in January I sat in my car at the bottom of Kestrel Road with the heater running and watched…

[1

post-11693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
