Not to apologize for the aisle. To tell me the part Rosalind had left out, the part that made me sit down.

Rosalind’s marriage was not “a tough time.” Her husband had emptied their accounts and left, and she was weeks from losing the house, with a four-year-old son, and she had gone to our parents in a panic. My father, who has spent his whole life unable to say no to her and unable to say the hard thing to anyone, made a choice that only a coward could rationalize as love. He decided that if he made my wedding smaller, colder, less of a celebration, it would soften the blow of the fact that they had already quietly given Rosalind the money they had been saving for years. Money that had, in part, come from me. The eight hundred dollars a month I sent them “for the house” had been going to keep my sister afloat.

Skipping the aisle was not the cruelty. It was the cover. He could not stand in front of two hundred people and give me away with a full heart while knowing he had spent my generosity on the daughter who had never once been kind to me, so he manufactured a reason to be absent instead. Absence was easier than being seen.

I did not forgive him at that kitchen table. I told him that a father who cannot bear to look at his own guilt does not get to call standing me up “keeping the peace.” I told him the back row was not a punishment I assigned. It was where he had been sitting my whole life. He just finally did it in public.

Rosalind kept the house. I did not fight it. Her son needs a roof, and I was not going to make a four-year-old pay for his grandfather’s cowardice.

Here is the part that stayed with me. That Saturday morning Emmett had been sanding a rocking chair. He finished it the week after the wedding and brought it to my greenhouse, and carved into the underside, in the same tiny letters as the bookshelf, were two dates. His wife’s birthday, and mine. He said his wife died before either of his sons married, and he had built a chair for a wedding he never got to attend, and he had been keeping the wood ever since, waiting for a daughter to give it to.

I have two fathers now, in the way that matters. One built me a chair before he even knew he’d need it. The other built an entire wedding around not having to face himself.

My parents and I are not estranged, exactly. We are polite. They come to holidays. My father sits, always, without being told, in the back. I stopped assigning him that seat a long time ago. He just knows it is his.

My father found me again three weeks after the wedding. Not to apologize for the aisle.
