He never cared about the compact car. He wanted me on the phone.

Marisol’s eighty-five thousand dollar vehicle was financed against the mountain cabin, and the cabin had been carrying a second mortgage since 2022. My father had sixty days to produce eleven thousand or the lender began proceedings, and I was the only person in the family who had eleven thousand. A stolen vehicle report was the only lever he could think of that would make me pick up.

He told me this himself, in April, sitting in my kitchen on the coast, because he drove nine hours to ask in person after the cease-and-desist made phone calls impossible.

Here is the part I still turn over. He was sixty-six years old and he had spent his savings, twice over, on a daughter who posts photographs, and he had never once considered asking the daughter who designs load-bearing structures for a living, because asking me would have meant admitting I had something he needed.

I said no. He drove nine hours back.

They lost the cabin in the autumn. Marisol sold the vehicle eighteen months later at a forty-thousand-dollar loss and moved back into their house, where she still lives at thirty-four.

My mother has never mentioned the piggy bank. Not once, in four years. I think she genuinely does not remember it, which is somehow the worst available outcome.

In April I inspected the Thistle Creek crossing, the bridge my grandfather worked on as a laborer in 1968. I stood underneath it with a tablet and a torch and thought about how he never saw a blueprint in his life and how nobody in my family has ever asked to see one of mine.

Perpetua came to the coast for my birthday in June. She brought a cake from a grocery store, on purpose, and we laughed until we could not breathe.

I keep the piggy bank on the shelf above my drafting table. Three dollars still in it. Not as a wound. As a measurement, because measuring things accurately is the entire discipline, and that is the most accurate number anyone in that house ever gave me.
